Listeriosis usually results from infection by Listeria monocytogenes, a Gram positive rod in the family Listeriaceae. This organism is a facultative intracellular pathogen and cause animal and human disease. In ruminants, listeriosis can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), abortion or blood poisoning. Signs include depression, loss of appetite, fever, lack of coordination, salivation, facial paralysis, and circling.
