Key warning symptoms:
Carnation mottle virus, the virus most frequently found in carnation samples, can cause symptomless infection in large varieties raised for cut flowers, but often causes mottle and stunting in miniature varieties. The virus is highly infectious and can be transmitted by plant to plant contact or by propagating infected plants.
Severe symptoms, including stunting, mosaic and overall poor quality, can be caused by a combined infection with Carnation mottle virus and Carnation necrotic fleck virus. Carnation necrotic fleck virus alone typically causes yellow or brown flecks or streaks on leaves, but is often symptomless in miniature varieties.
